Name: Abhinav Bindra, Gagan Narang

Country: India

Game: shooting

It has been a disappointing Rio 2016 Olympics so far for India with none of the athletes coming close to winning a medal yet. Seven shooters have already been in competition and only one has come close to the final round and two of them are still in contention but their chances look bleak too.

With that, the onus has fallen on the experienced to get India going in terms of medals or even coming close to it. And that’s why, much will be expected from 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympics medallists Abhinav Bindra and Gagan Narang when they take the range. A bit later, Manavjit Singh Sandhu and Kynan Chenai will continue their trap qualifier and hope for a massive turnaround to reach the Finals.

It’s enlightening to be left behind by a shuttle bus after a women’s air pistol final at the Deodoro range in Rio. To linger and watch what happens when the Indians have packed up, and taken their half-baked, wishful dreams to another arena. On Sunday, the sport to fall back on is archery — by no measure as assured or poised in India as shooting.
